Demystifying Failure Through Play – A Clown’s Guide to Learning

There is a spontaneous, fearless, and playful part of yourself just waiting to get out, and there’s only one thing stopping it: your fear of failure. Failure is vital to the learning process; in fact, it is probably our first and most important learning tool.

Experimentation, risk, and curiosity drive the learning process from the very beginning of our lives, but as we grow and develop anxiety around being wrong, we lose the valuable tool of failure. Professional Clown and Teaching Artist Mike Funt invites you, in this workshop, to explore the power and benefit of a healthy relationship to failure through play, connection, and vulnerability. The workshop includes improv and theatre games designed to encourage participants to “celebrate their failures in public” as well as group discussions and reflections on participants’ existing relationship to failure. Mike brings his years of training and performance experience as a clown to help you discover a silly, curious, and mischievous learning mindset that is rooted in humility and not afraid to fail.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to use play to diminish a fear of failure and encourage students to take healthy risks.
  • Learn how to use vulnerability to build confidence and innovation.
  • Learn how to use connection to develop equitable and inclusive collaboration.
